How to Style Elegant Outfits for Real Life This Summer
Every summer, I notice the same pattern. Social media suddenly becomes a beautiful collection of impossible outfits, but not relatable. Blazers are layered over everything when it's 38°C outside. Immaculate all-white looks that somehow survive an entire day. Heels for long walks around the city. Structured outfits that don't fit into real life.
And while I absolutely love fashion inspiration, I also believe something else: elegance should fit reality. Because what is the point of creating a beautiful wardrobe if it doesn't support the life you're actually living?
Real life means commuting, running errands, working from home, going to the office, meeting friends for dinner after a long day, grocery shopping, heatwaves, public transportation, sweaty afternoons, and spontaneous plans.
The good news is that elegance and practicality are not opposites. In fact, I think true elegance lives exactly there: where beauty meets functionality.
Start With Fabrics, Not Outfits
During summer, fabrics matter more than trends. The quickest way to feel uncomfortable is to build an outfit around aesthetics while ignoring temperatures.
I always prioritize breathable materials such as:
linen
cotton
poplin
lightweight viscose
silk blends
These fabrics immediately create a more effortless silhouette because they move with your body rather than fighting it.
And honestly, movement is one of the most underrated elements of elegant dressing. An outfit can be beautiful, but if you spend the entire day adjusting it, it quickly stops being elegant.
The Office and Commuting Formula
If you commute, especially during a heatwave, simplicity becomes your best friend.
One of my favorite outfit formulas is: Wide-leg linen trousers + a sleeveless top + delicate jewelry + comfortable loafers, boat shoes, or elegant sandals. Or a midi flowy dress with sandals, or ballet flats, and delicate jewels.
I love this combination because it feels polished without becoming heavy. If your office has air conditioning, carry a lightweight linen shirt or cardigan inside your tote bag instead of layering from home.
I also think commuting is one of those moments where practicality deserves much more appreciation.
Your bag matters.
Your shoes matter.
Your comfort matters.
I recently upgraded my everyday commute by replacing an old backpack with a beautiful pre-loved leather tote bag, and it genuinely improved my daily experience. Sometimes elegance is hidden inside these small decisions.
Errands Deserve Nice Outfits Too
This might be an unpopular opinion, but I genuinely believe errands deserve beautiful outfits.
Not because other people are watching, but because your day deserves intention.
One of my favorite summer formulas for errands is: A linen midi dress + a French basket bag + flat sandals + sunglasses.
Simple. Comfortable. Feminine.
The basket bag instantly elevates everything without making the outfit feel too precious. And perhaps this is one of my biggest summer style philosophies: You don't need to reserve your favorite pieces for special occasions.
Wear them now. Life itself is the occasion.
Summer Dinners Are About Ease
There is something magical about summer dinners.
Whether it's an aperitivo, a family dinner, or an evening with friends, summer naturally invites us to slow down a little.
For these occasions, I love keeping things incredibly simple. A silk skirt with a white top, a monochromatic linen set, and a flowy dress with gold jewelry.
Summer evening elegance often comes from subtraction instead of addition. One beautiful piece is enough. The warm weather already creates an atmosphere for you.
You don't need to overcomplicate things.
Create Outfit Formulas Instead of New Outfits Every Day
I genuinely think one of the secrets to effortless summer style is abandoning the idea that every outfit must be different.
Instead, create repeatable formulas.
Mine usually revolve around these combinations:
Linen trousers + sleeveless top
Midi dress + basket bag
Wide-leg jeans + cotton shirt
Matching linen set + delicate jewelry
Flowy skirt + fitted tank top
Once you find combinations that work, your mornings become infinitely easier.
And honestly, reducing decision fatigue feels luxurious.
Dress for the Mood You Want
One of my favorite mantras has always been: Dress for the mood you want, not the mood you have.
Summer is actually the perfect season to practice this philosophy.
Feeling tired? Wear a dress that makes you feel put together.
Feeling overwhelmed? Choose softer silhouettes and comfortable fabrics.
Feeling uninspired? Add a playful accessory.
Clothing will not solve every problem, but it can absolutely influence how you move through your day, and that matters.
Elegance Is Not Reserved for Ideal Conditions
I think this is the biggest lesson summer has taught me. Elegance is not something you practice only when:
The weather is perfect,
You’re on vacation
You have enough time
Your schedule is empty
Elegance belongs to everyday life.
It belongs to commuting.
It belongs to grocery shopping.
It belongs to heatwaves.
It belongs to ordinary Tuesdays.
Because true style isn't about creating a beautiful image.
It's about creating a beautiful experience of your own life.
And maybe that's the most elegant thing we can do this summer:
Stop waiting for ideal circumstances and start dressing beautifully for the life we're already living
